Review of The Walking Dead TV Series 6 Hershel Greene Figure!

By request of my buddy Nathaniel, we are kicking off Walking Dead week by taking a look at the wisest man to live in the zombie apocalypse, Hershel Greene.

The Basics:
Scale: 5"
Price: $14.99 in store, $14.99-$25.99 online

Sculpt and Paint:
Man, I know that this is only the first review of the set of series 6 (I won't be reviewing The Governor as I have the previous one, or the Bungee Walker) but I have to say that this is probably the BEST set of Walking Dead TV Series figures that McFarlane Toys has released. This Hershel figure quickly became one of my favorites from this set of figures, and with good reason. The sculpt on this figure is amazing. As with all of the newer Walking Dead TV figures, McFarlane took 3-D scans of the actors, which means  that the facial likeness should be spot on, and more often than not, that is true. Hershel here, looks dead on to the actor who portrays him (Scott Wilson).

He also is sporting his classic suspenders with a very detailed shirt underneath. All of the stripes are sculpted on as opposed to just being painted, and the pants have crazy good detail with all of the wrinkles and little details that make them look worn. He also has two unique lower right legs, both with great sculpts. The one he comes packaged "wearing" is the stump leg. The pants are folded up to cover the stump, but the way it was sculpted makes it clear there is a stump under there. The other lower leg is his prosthetic leg. The pants are rolled up above the prosthetic so you can clearly see the awesome details of the prosthetic. I would recommend being careful, if only because the rod connecting the boot to the lower leg seems like it could break if you apply to much pressure. I honestly can't get over the sculpt on this guy, It's just so well done and is a great tribute to ol' Hershel. That said, a sculpt is only good if the paint is properly applied.
The paint work on this figure is exceptionally well done. The face paint is perfect, with some great care taken with the eyes. The hair is also well done, painted perfectly to match the "thinning" effect that the sculpt tries to show. The paintwork on the shirt and pants also is really well done. It makes the clothes look very "lived-in" and worn out. The boots also look really good, and they almost look like they have a leathery texture. One thing to note, is to watch the paint on the suspenders. It is a thin area so there could be cases of the black leaking onto the white or vice-versa. So far I haven't seen anyone have that problem but it is something to look out for.

Accessories:
For accessories, Hershel comes with the two lower right legs that I mentioned above, as well as his pistol which fits into his holster, an two crutches. The crutches look great, and are painted really well,  but it is a bit difficult to get him to stand using them. It can be done, but I will definitely be displaying it with the prosthetic leg, which can be difficult to get him balanced with at times but can definitely be done with some patience and finesse.  The gun is really well done with a nice weathered look and it fits well in either hand.

He has great accessories, but it's weird that he didn't come with an alternate head with his bandanna that he wore while taking care of the sick in the prison, or even a "Walker Hershel" head, and a bloody Michonne sword. I mean, it's not like Mcfarlane, would release this amazing figure and then right after announce a new version with those accessories and even a new lower right leg right?

Articulation:
Okay, so here is what makes this figure (and series) better than the previous series of figures. Hershel has a ball-jointed head, a swivel-hinge shoulder, swivel-hinge elbow, swivel at the lower wrist, swivel-hinge at the upper wrist, which is restricted by the shirt cuffs, swivel at the waist which is a bit restricted, swivel-hinge hips similar to the DCUC hips, though the right is a bit restricted due to the sculpt, swivel-hinge knees, swivel-hinge left ankle, and boot swivel on the right boot only. One thing to note with the left leg. When you raise it up, take note not to go too far. The gun holster is made from a harder plastic than the ones that Rick and Abraham are sporting, so if you do what I did and test the articulation to see how far it goes, you may spend a few minutes looking for a gun holster that pops right out of it's spot. It's a simple fix no doubt, but something to be wary of.

Overall:
So this is probably the definitive Hershel (screw that other one). This Hershel has such a great head sculpt and attention to detail that I would say it's the perfect Hershel figure. I cannot recommend this guy enough, and I would suggest you get him sooner rather than later, as I can see his price rising high in the future.

10 OUT OF 10!!!
I would also like to apologize for the lack of pictures, but my camera was fading in and out on me while taking pictures for this review, the other upcoming reviews will have a lot more.
Below is also a size comparison showing how he stands among the other TV Series figures I own.

Check back tomorrow for a look at the Series 6 Rick Grimes!!
